We show how the BRICK Ultra can be used as a compact edge computing platform in a networked industrial environment – from production and infrastructure monitoring to digital control centers.

Modern edge and AI computing platform for industrial applications

An international industrial and infrastructure operator was planning to modernize its decentralized IT structure. The aim was to process data from machines, sensors and cameras directly on site, carry out AI-based evaluations in real time and only transfer relevant results to central cloud and control systems.

The company was looking for a compact industrial PC that could reliably handle edge AI workloads as well as classic automation and visualization tasks.

The challenge: Decentralized intelligence under real operating conditions

The hardware requirements were varied and demanding:

  • Edge performance for AI applications: Local processing of image data, sensor information and key production figures in real time (Edge AI / Inference).
  • Industrial automation & stability: Use in machine and system environments with 24/7 operation and high reliability.
  • Limited space in decentralized installations: Installation directly on machines, in control cabinets or vehicle and infrastructure housings.
  • Network and system integration: Secure connection to SCADA, ERP and cloud systems with simultaneous data pre-processing at the edge.
  • Multi-display and control centre operation: Visualization of complex data situations in control rooms and monitoring systems.

The solution: BRICK Ultra as a compact edge AI and industrial platform

The choice fell on the BRICK Ultra from spo-comm, a particularly compact industrial PC that was specially developed for edge and embedded scenarios. The following features were decisive:

  1. Ultra-compact design: Ideal for decentralized installations directly on machines, in vehicles or in confined infrastructure spaces.
  1. AI-enabled CPU architecture: Supports modern AI workloads such as image processing, pattern recognition and edge inference directly on site – without permanent cloud dependency.
  1. Fanless, robust design: low-maintenance, vibration-resistant and suitable for 24/7 continuous operation in industrial environments.
  1. Flexible connectivity: Integration into industrial networks, machine control systems and higher-level IT systems thanks to extensive interfaces.
  1. Visualization capability: Suitable for multi-display applications in control stations and control rooms for real-time monitoring of complex systems.

The implementation

The BRICK Ultra was installed decentrally at machines, infrastructure nodes and control points.

In production, it was used for local processing of sensor data and AI-supported analysis of camera images for quality control. In traffic and infrastructure scenarios, it was used for real-time monitoring of operating states and events.

At the same time, the system acted as an edge gateway: pre-processed data was filtered and only relevant information was forwarded to central platforms and cloud systems. In control centres, aggregated data came together in multi-display setups to visualize critical states.

Conclusion and outlook for edge AI and industrial digitalization

The BRICK Ultra is a powerful edge computing platform that is specially designed to meet the requirements of modern industrial, transportation and infrastructure environments.

The combination of compact design, AI-capable computing power and industrial-grade robustness enables reliable use directly at the point of origin of the data – where real-time decisions are crucial.

The BRICK Ultra therefore forms a scalable basis for future edge AI architectures, from smart factories and networked infrastructures to intelligent control and monitoring systems.

AI performance for edge computing and modern industrial applications

At the heart of the BRICK Ultra is the Intel® Core™ Ultra 5 125U CPU, which offers integrated AI functionalities in addition to classic computing power. This makes the system ideal for applications such as AI-supported image processing, edge analytics or smart factory processes where data needs to be processed directly on site.

The modern architecture ensures high efficiency and strong performance at the same time. In combination with up to 96 GB DDR5 RAM and fast NVMe SSDs, the result is a platform that can reliably handle even demanding workloads.

Fanless high-performance industrial PC with flexible expandability

Despite its high performance, the BRICK Ultra is completely fanless and therefore noiseless and maintenance-free. This is particularly important for continuous 24/7 use in industrial environments or sensitive areas such as control stations and control rooms.

The system is also ideally positioned in terms of connectivity and expandability: With 2x LAN (1x 2.5 GbE + 1x GbE), a fast network basis is available. Additional functions such as 5G/LTE, WiFi or Bluetooth can be integrated via various M.2 slots. This is complemented by 4x USB 3.2 ports and two serial COM interfaces (RS232/422/485) for connecting machines and peripherals.

Robust design for industry, transportation and digital signage

The BRICK Ultra has been specially developed for use in demanding conditions. A wide range power input (12-24V), an extended temperature range of -10°C to +60°C and a vibration and shock-resistant design in accordance with IEC 61373 ensure reliable operation even in harsh environments.

At the same time, the dual DisplayPort with 4K resolution allows the industrial PC to be used in digital signage applications, control stations or monitoring systems. Thanks to DIN rail or wall mounting, the system can be flexibly integrated into a wide range of scenarios – from the production line to the edge server in the infrastructure.

Versatile thanks to modern interfaces and AI support

The combination of an AI-capable CPU, powerful hardware and industrial interfaces opens up numerous possible applications for the BRICK Ultra. These include automation solutions, IoT gateways, real-time data aggregation and intelligent monitoring systems.

Companies benefit from a future-proof platform that both meets current requirements and offers sufficient performance reserves for future applications.

Modern HMI and edge computing solution for production environments

In modern manufacturing environments, real-time data, stable process visualization and reliable networking between machine level and IT infrastructure are decisive factors for efficient production processes. A medium-sized mechanical engineering company therefore planned to modernize its existing Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) on several production lines.

The company was looking for a compact industrial PC that could both visualize machine and process data and serve as an edge computing platform for pre-processing and forwarding operating data.

The challenge: limited space and demanding surroundings

The technical requirements for the hardware were diverse:

  • Limited installation space: The control computers had to be integrated directly behind monitors or in narrow control cabinets.
  • Ambient conditions: Due to the dust pollution in the production hall, only a fanless system was an option in order to minimize failures caused by mechanical wear parts.
  • Performance: A modern and energy-efficient platform was required to display machine statuses, process data and visualizations on several displays.
  • Connectivity: The system should also be able to pre-process operating and sensor data locally and transfer it reliably to higher-level IT and ERP systems.

The solution: WINDBOX II NX as a compact industrial PC

The choice fell on the WINDBOX II NX from spo-comm, an ultra-flat industrial PC specially designed for such scenarios. The following specifications were decisive for the decision:

  1. Compact design: With a housing height of just 19 millimeters, the system can be easily mounted directly behind the operating panels of the machines using a VESA bracket.
  2. Powerful hardware: The built-in Intel® N150 (4x 0.10 GHz, max. 3.60 GHz) processor offers sufficient reserves for process visualization and parallel edge computing tasks.
  3. Passive cooling: The robust metal housing acts as a heat sink. As the system does not require a fan, it is low-maintenance and protected against the ingress of dust.
  4. Interface diversity: The HDMI 2.0 port and 2x DisplayPort 1.4 connections allow several high-resolution displays to be operated simultaneously. Two 2.5 Gbps LAN ports also enable reliable connection to production networks and higher-level IT systems.

The implementation

The WINDBOX II NX was installed as the central control computer at the individual production stations. Peripheral devices such as barcode scanners and touch displays were connected via the USB interfaces.

In addition to the classic HMI function, the system also handles the local pre-processing of sensor data and the forwarding of relevant operating data to central ERP and monitoring systems. This has enabled data flows to be made more efficient and reaction times within the production processes to be improved.

Conclusion and outlook for HMI and edge applications

With the WINDBOX II NX, a compact and reliable platform for modern process visualization and industrial edge connectivity has been created. The combination of ultra-flat design, fanless cooling and modern network and display connectivity is ideal for use in demanding industrial environments.
