Project objective

The aim of the final project was to install a single-board computer with a display in a handheld housing of a certain size. The system should also have an easily accessible SD card and a rechargeable battery for mobile use.

The solution

As a classic Game Boy case was to be used, the external dimensions of 150 x 90 x 35 mm were fixed. This also influenced the selection of the other components. After some research, the Raspberry Pi Zero model was chosen as the single-board computer, as it fitted the requirements perfectly in terms of both dimensions and technical data. Power is supplied via a classic smartphone battery. Its voltage is converted from 3.8 to 5 volts using a Li-ion battery converter, a so-called PowerBoost Charger. As part of this, an on/off button and the option to charge the battery via a micro USB cable were also implemented.

And all that fits into a small Game Boy? Yes, it does. The housing only had to be slightly modified to accommodate all the components. The display has been extended, the battery compartment removed and additional holes added for the control unit. Incidentally, this is done via a specially manufactured control board, a so-called “all-in-one-button PCB”, which is connected to a classic USB control board. A service flap has also been added to make it easy to change the SD card.

So much for the hardware. Now all that remained was to get the system up and running. Our trainee opted for a customized Linux operating system called EmulationStation, which makes it possible to configure the various buttons with the respective control commands. All that remained was to complete the installation and this very special mini PC was ready. With the help of so-called emulators (= programs that emulate a system to make software compatible), it can now be played with popular retro games.

Naturally, we want to retain this much expertise and motivation. We are therefore delighted that Erwin Seliverstov will continue to work for us after completing his training as an IT systems electronics technician. From August 1, 2017, he will support us as an employee in the areas of service and product management with his concentrated knowledge.

Our vacancies

Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? It is. So we also took the time to attend two events. Keyword eCommerce Day and “VR in Nuremberg”. At the former, we were brought up to date with the latest developments in eCommerce in exciting presentations on Tuesday. In addition to trends and forecasts for retail in the digital age, the focus was also on payment methods, growth opportunities for online stores and what we can expect from Google in the near future.   in the areas of SEO and SEA. The important topics of eCommerce law and data protection were not neglected either. We learned a lot and were able to take away new ideas for our own website.

Virtual Reality in Nuremberg

Things continued on Thursday with  at the “VR in Nuremberg” (#vrnue) event at the Südwestpark Forum. Local companies and start-ups presented impressive virtual reality applications. The exhibitors’ enthusiasm for their projects was infectious. We had interesting discussions about the opportunities that augmented and virtual reality offer for Industry 4.0. In addition to the exhibition, the barcamp sessions were also the perfect opportunity to exchange ideas and visions and be inspired.

spo-comm takes its hat off to the organizers and all those who made this event something unique with over a hundred free offers. Just one question remains: Where can we register for the next Web Week?

A successful week

After an exciting week, a visibly satisfied trade fair team was welcomed at the spo-comm headquarters. Our team on site, Managing Director Michael Sporrer, CMO Bernd Moosmüller, the two Sales Managers Martin Wiesneth and Simon Pangerl and the rest of spo-comm, would like to thank you for the numerous new contacts, our customers who visited us at the stand, the constructive discussions and the input that ISE 2017 brought with it. “ISE 2017 was one of the most exciting trade fair appearances ever for us. We are now looking forward to lots of new projects and a successful year together with our customers and partners,” says CEO Michael Sporrer.

The new spo-book KUMO IV takes center stage

A highlight at our stand this year was our new spo-book KUMO IV, which was able to demonstrate its performance (Intel Core i5 6400T, paired with an nVidia GTX1060, concentrated on 20×20.5 cm)  up close using virtual reality glasses. Connected to two 4K@60Hz monitors and linked to an HTC VIVE, our visitors had the opportunity to immerse themselves in virtual reality and see the performance of our spo-book KUMO IV for themselves.

The spo-comm WINDBOX series

The prize was presented in person during a visit to the MSI IPC management floor at spo-comm GmbH’s headquarters in Nuremberg. MSI expressed its thanks for the successful cooperation and set the course for new joint projects.

Since 2008, spo-comm GmbH has been the European partner for the IPC systems of the Taiwanese hardware manufacturer MSI. The high quality of the products coupled with excellent customer service quickly led to success.

spo-comm and MSI also work closely together on the development of new devices. In this way, the manufacturers can jointly respond to customer wishes and implement them in order to continuously optimize the range. This is reflected in the successful product lines WINDBOX, BRICK and NOVA, which are regularly updated to the latest technical standards.

Currently, spo-comm and MSI are jointly planning the new products for this year. In February, the further development of the SQUARE 15 Panel PC will be launched on the market.

We would like to thank MSI for the long-standing partnership and our customers for contributing to this success.
