spo-comm: An eventful year is drawing to a close. How are you doing?

Michael Sporrer:(Laughs) Over again?

Bernd Moosmüller: We are certainly proud of our team. We were able to implement a lot of projects this year, both internal and external. A lot of sweat and blood goes into it. We also have a lot in the pipeline for the coming year.

Michael Sporrer: And there was growth too!

spo-comm: That’s right, we were able to welcome our sales employee Hülya Ergin and our marketing employee Julia Reinhard back from parental leave. Has this already had a positive impact on processes this year?

Michael Sporrer: There have certainly been noticeable changes. Above all, we were able to further expand our customer support and our on-site customer appointments. Our two account managers Martin Wiesneth and Mustafa Ergin have done a great job this year. That’s something to be proud of. By now, there is probably not a single spot in the DACH region that the two have not yet seen. We were able to master this thanks in particular to our internal reinforcement. That is what I will remember most from this year.

spo-comm:
But then there were also some less pleasant events this year. Keyword “Intel’s CPU problem”. What was going through your mind when this made the rounds?

Bernd Moosmüller: Honestly? At first we thought it was a joke. Intel has never experienced supply bottlenecks before. Of course, you think directly of the customers. Especially the large projects that have been running for years and are dependent on certain CPUs. We first had to clarify the situation.

spo-comm: You both flew directly to Taiwan shortly afterwards to meet up with some of our partners. Did that help you?

Bernd Moosmüller:(Laughs) In a way, yes. About 10,000 kilometers to the east. No, but seriously. It has helped us in that we have once again realized that we have the right partners at our side. It’s also exciting to see how things are moving now. Where previously everything was traditionally geared towards Intel, alternatives are now being created. Keyword: AMD Ryzen.

Michael Sporrer: First and foremost, we submitted generous system forecasts for the coming year to our partners a few months ago. Our customers should feel nothing, or as little as possible, of the current situation that we have to thank Intel for.

spo-comm:
What can we look forward to in 2019?

Michael Sporrer: Firstly, there is the ISE in Amsterdam in February, where we will once again have our own stand. This time we are focusing on everything to do with high-end graphics. We will not only be presenting our classics such as the WINDBOX III EVO, but also Nvidia-based newcomers such as the TEGRA 2 or our QUADRO P1000. Our customers can also look forward to something on the software side soon. Even if I am perhaps already giving too much away with the keyword “monitoring”.

More spo-comm Mini-PCs

Bernd Moosmüller: There is also a lot going on regionally. As big fans and diligent visitors of the Nuremberg Web Week, sorry, the Nuremberg Digital Festival I mean, of course, we are planning to become active ourselves next year. If everything goes well, we will know more in January 2019. What will definitely be coming regardless of this is our new website! There is already a lot of programming going on. This is something that not only our customers can look forward to. Our marketing team is already eager to get started.

spo-comm:
Thank you very much for these insights!

After a short speech in which Michael Sporrer reviewed the successful year 2018, there was a Christmas present for all employees and the buffet was opened: Goose, dumplings, caramelized pumpkin, cordon bleu, beet carpaccio and much more – our mouths were watering again. We are already looking forward to the next Christmas party.

10 years of cooperation

The partnership between Nuremberg-based spo-comm and the Taiwan-based industrial PC division MSI IPC of hardware manufacturer Micro Star International (MSI) has now been in place for 10 years.

As has been customary for some time now, the spo-comm management team made its annual visit to Taiwan in 2018. After a 14-hour flight, a total travel time of approx. 18 hours and half overcome jet lag thanks to a 7-hour time difference, the long-awaited meeting with the MSI IPC contacts was on the agenda.

Successful models remain in place

Of course, a lot is discussed at such meetings – but one thing is certain: the partnership promises new models soon! spo-comm and MSI IPC are constantly working on developing new products to meet the high demands of our customers. Product series such as BRICK, NOVA and, of course, the absolute bestseller WINDBOX have long convinced our customers of the top quality of the mini PCs developed in cooperation with MSI IPC.

The spo-comm WINDBOX

We are looking forward to further cooperation with MSI IPC and are already excited about the upcoming projects!

The successful models of cooperation:

–    WINDBOX II Quad
–    WINDBOX III EVO  (NEW!)
–    NOVA Q170  (NEW!)

Project objective

At the beginning of the year, he built an arcade game machine and enthusiastically tells his colleagues about it. Michael Sporrer also hears about this and asks with great interest how Erwin built the machine and what components he used for it.

And so the project to build an arcade game machine for the spo-comm team’s lunch breaks was born.

The implementation

After planning and designing the housing, the next step was to get the right materials. Planks were purchased, cut to the correct dimensions, filed and laminated.

Due to the consistently positive experience with the Raspberry Pi Zero, which was used for the Gameboy project, Erwin also decided to use a Raspberry Pi for the slot machine project.  The latest version, the Raspberry Pi 3 B+, was the most suitable. At the heart of the system is the 64-bit 1.4 GHz Quad Core CPU, which is supported by 1 GB of RAM. The model is also equipped with integrated WLAN, Bluetooth and four USB 2.0 interfaces.

In addition to the 19.5″ monitor, loudspeakers were also installed in the vending machine. This and the self-built controller board, which is equipped with two joysticks and various buttons to allow the multi-player function, give the machine its typical retro look. The USB hub, which is located in the middle of the controller board, can be used to connect various controllers or steering wheels for certain games, as well as keyboards for easier operation of the settings.

When choosing the operating system, Erwin opted for the latest version of a suitable Linux distribution called EmulationStation. This software makes it possible to configure the various control commands for the available buttons. Now the mini PC just had to be loaded with popular arcade classics and the project was a success!

At the same time, spo-comm GmbH now welcomes its newly qualified office management assistant and a fresh-faced IT systems electronics technician to its team!
We wish both of them a successful and ambitious start to their careers.

Training at spo-comm

Apprenticeship as an office management assistant

Our employee Anna began her training as an office management assistant in September 2015. In addition to her work at spo-comm GmbH, she attended vocational school 9 in Nuremberg once a week and was able to shorten her training by six months thanks to her good academic performance.

Anna’s training focused on office administration – i.e. correspondence and telephone calls with customers. She also provided support at management level. In addition to preparing quotations and order confirmations, her duties also included organizational tasks such as planning events and procuring office supplies.

“When I started my apprenticeship 2 ½ years ago, I was warmly welcomed by all my colleagues, so I immediately felt very comfortable. As team spirit and open communication are very important to us, I had the chance to actively participate in projects right from the start. The new things I learned during my training helped me to master my own challenging projects independently and carefully. The next step in my career will be the 2-month training course to become a trainer, which starts in the summer. I’m really looking forward to continuing to be part of the spo-comm team and I’m excited to see what challenges still await me!”

Training as an IT systems electronics technician

Our colleague Alex works in a completely different area to Anna. His training as an IT systems electronics technician also began in September 2015. He attended the vocational school in Erlangen in blocks and was also able to shorten the training period to 2 ½ years due to his excellent academic performance.

Alex is always in contact with customers and ensures that our customers’ mini PCs are configured correctly. Alex is also responsible for the repair and maintenance of our spo-books. Careful error analysis is just as important here as, for example, the ability to think outside the box. Even extensive software and hardware analyses do not always lead to a clear result, as Alex discovered during his training. The experience of our technicians has served him well here. Today, Alex has a broad range of knowledge in the field of IT and is able to independently provide our customers with advice and support!

“I really enjoy working at spo-comm and am glad to have completed my training here. As I was already working with computers before my apprenticeship, I was able to combine my hobby with my job as a prospective IT systems electronics technician. I work independently on my own projects and am looking forward to more interesting tasks at spo-comm!”

spo-comm is very happy to call both Anna and Alex part of our team. We are looking forward to a great time and great projects in the future!

We are currently implementing numerous exciting projects for our customers. There are also other reasons to be happy at spo-comm. Because we have a few surprises in store for the near future!
As we naturally want to devote our full attention to these projects, spo-comm will unfortunately not be exhibiting at this year’s ISE. However, from 08.02. will be visiting Integrated Systems Europe until 09.02.18!

spo-comm is very pleased about the long-standing and above all successful cooperation with MSI. The spo-comm management visited the partner in October and received the award for the best partner 2017 at the SPS/IPC in Nuremberg in November.

European partner of MSI since 2008

For almost 10 years now, spo-comm GmbH has been the exclusive partner of MSI IPC in Europe. MSI IPC is the industrial PC division of the hardware manufacturer MSI(Micro Star International) based in Taiwan.

Successful models have been and are being created

Together with MSI IPC, spo-comm GmbH is constantly working on new products that meet the high demands of our customers in every case. The jointly developed product lines are: BRICK, NOVA and not forgetting the absolute bestseller: the WINDBOX, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2018 (see also “spo-comm and MSI IPC celebrate 10 years of collaboration“).

The collaboration will continue in the future and new models will be developed together, with software that is always up to date.
