Task

Clouds.
In all variations, always in motion and each one unique. Whether as cloud cover, small isolated cotton balls or huge cloudscapes. However simple clouds may seem to us, they raise many unanswered questions. Not least because they are at unspeakable heights and usually pass by again quickly.
The darkness at night also makes it difficult to keep an eye on the celestial phenomena halfway through the day.
To make matters worse, the observation and analysis of clouds worldwide still involves a great deal of manual work. For example, a meteorologist has to go outside several times a day to determine the degree of cloud cover and the types of clouds.

PMOD/WRC took this as an opportunity to go one step further in the direction of automation. Using self-written software and an infrared camera as part of a specially designed installation, cloud research is now carried out much more efficiently.
A catadioptric system, consisting of a gold-coated convex mirror and an infrared cloud camera (the so-called IRCCAM), takes around 1,440 images of the sky every day. Cloud emissions, as well as their height and density, can now be observed, documented and analyzed 24 hours a day. Seven days a week. As the IRCCAM is located outdoors, it must also be wind and weatherproof. A demanding task – even for a mini PC – which finds its place here as a control device.

Product solution

The embedded PC for particularly harsh working environments: The spo-book RUGGED HM87. The robust IPC performs reliably even at temperatures from minus 30ยฐ Celsius to plus 60ยฐ Celsius. A generous selection of COM and USB interfaces, as well as a powerful and energy-saving Core i3 processor from Intel, make the spo-book RUGGED HM87 the ideal solution for PMOD/WRC’s innovative outdoor installation.

Conclusion

The ingenuity of PMOD/WRC makes a valuable contribution to cloud research. We are pleased to be able to contribute to this with our mini PC, the spo-book RUGGED HM87, and that the IRCCAM of the Swiss research institute has been working flawlessly for several months now.

For many, the winter season is synonymous with: Braving the slopes!

But before you go up the mountain, you have to buy a ticket at the ticket office and sometimes wait a little longer in line. In the meantime, however, you can make good use of the time by looking at one of the numerous information displays. No matter where you are in Austria, in the most likely case these will come from feratel.

Price information, ski routes, weather conditions and forecasts, piste opening times and much more. Under the motto “Window to the world”, the holistic, customized solutions of the successful Austrian company provide you with everything you need to arrive back down in the valley at the end of the day safe and sound.

In ski resorts in particular, it is important that the flow of information via the screens is not interrupted and that you can rely on the information in tickers and the like. The second is that displays and mini PCs don’t break a sweat, regardless of the temperature. Reliability and resilience are therefore particularly important here.

In September 2015, the Klubhaus St. Pauli had its kick-off and became the neighborhood eye-catcher par excellence. Unique is probably the best way to describe the building. Almost 300 panels form a 700 square meter, three-dimensional advertising space and turn the clubhouse not only into Europe’s largest media faรงade, but also, thanks to sophisticated programming, into an interactive digital signage event.

Looking behind the faรงade, creative and convergent thinking requires a powerful and reliable embedded PC to handle the installation in terms of control and the provision of web content.

Product solution

High performance and graphics requirements make the spo-book KUMO III mini PC the ideal choice.

In the case of Klubhaus St. Pauli, the spo-book is used with a 240 GB SSD and an 8 GB SO-DDRIII RAM. The energy-efficient Core i5 processor from Intel and the GT740M graphics chip from nVIDIA ensure smooth control of the lighting, video and audio matrix, as well as the uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

The content of the media faรงade can also be controlled conveniently and reliably via remote control using a separate spo-book KUMO III.

Problem and the idea

A familiar situation for many: as soon as several people in a company have access to equipment, work materials or similar, this often automatically results in things not being put back promptly or properly after use, perhaps even getting lost in the endless expanses of halls or company premises.
An appropriate storage system is therefore essential to ensure security, transparency and availability in the depot area.

A panel PC from spo-comm provides the technical basis for the solution

The STB GmbH product range leaves nothing to be desired. In collaboration with spo-comm GmbH, the WS 8/600 drawer shelving system has been equipped with the fanless SQUARE 15 touch panel PC for user-friendly control and is, if you like, the perfect entry-level model.

Thanks to the specially developed software from STB, the 15-inch touchscreen of the SQUARE 15 gives you an insight into the contents of the Basic cabinet. Authorized users have access to the individual drawers and their compartments via a selection system. The Intel platform of the robust Panel PC with a Dual Core Processor D2550 proves itself particularly through its low power consumption with optimum performance.

Conclusion

The SQUARE 15 – the icing on the cake of the reliable WS 8/600 basic cabinet. Once again, teamwork has more than paid off and customers can now benefit from a convenient and transparent storage system.

They were looking for a suitable mini PC for a measuring station that measures and analyzes the snow water equivalent and the moisture content of the snow 2500 meters above sea level.

In addition to the constant availability, the challenge was to cope with the limited infrastructure and the extreme climatic conditions prevailing there.

Technical adaptability to extreme conditions was the most important criterion for the scientists at LMU Munich

Product / Solution

spo-book MOVE T56N is the name of the system. In addition to approval for ambient temperatures from -30ยฐC to +60ยฐC despite passive cooling, it has a voltage input of 9V to 36V direct current. The voltage transformer, which is optimized for the automotive sector, reliably compensates for temporary irregularities and protects the entire system with an additional fuse.

Another advantage is the high-quality workmanship of the internal and external plug connections, which do not come loose even when subjected to vibrations or strong thermal differences.

Conclusion

A mini PC, which was developed for the extraordinary loads in motor vehicles, is also convincing as a measuring station in the high mountains under difficult conditions. So the water content of snow in this region is no secret.

Task

The exhibition concepts of the Salzburg Museum are based on an interplay between the material presence of the object and the corresponding media accompaniment. One thing is certain: the content must take center stage and the presentation technology should remain barely noticeable to visitors. Silent, flat, easy to install and universally applicable were the most important requirements for the hardware. A system, preferably without moving parts, should ensure a high degree of reliability and thus remain “invisible” to visitors and the museum’s technical management.

Product / Solution

Several spo-book models could have fulfilled the requirement, but in order to be able to display sophisticated graphic content, the performance of the system also had to be right. The choice fell on the spo-book WINDBOX III equipped with a solid state disk. The ultra-low-voltage Core2Duo CPU, the fanless and flat design of the system convinced the museum staff after several test installations.

In order to inspire the 800,000 visitors to the museum every year, new presentation options and innovations are constantly being sought. With the spo-book WINDBOX III , a reliable basis for supporting the exhibition concept was found and successfully integrated.
