RUGGED Q170 – Full control on the long haul

28.10.2025

A logistics company that specializes in long-distance transport and construction site logistics needs computers that can withstand the constant environmental conditions of its work. The heavy-duty trucks used in extreme conditions are equipped with telematics systems that collect vehicle data in real time, optimize routes and communicate with headquarters. A reliable, powerful and durable mini PC is required to optimize operations and keep the total cost of ownership in check.

The solution: the spo-comm RUGGED Q170

Our RUGGED Q170 has been identified as the ideal solution for the requirements. With an Intel® Core™ i5-6500TE processor (4x 2.3 GHz) and up to 32 GB RAM, it offers sufficient performance for demanding applications. Its fanless design and robust aluminum housing protect against dust, moisture and vibrations. The extended temperature range of -40°C to +70°C enables use in extreme climate zones. The Mini-PC has an extended input voltage range of 9-36 V, which compensates for voltage peaks when starting a vehicle. It is also tested against vibrations and shocks in accordance with military standards.

Technology in detail: the tasks of the vehicle PC

  1. Real-time vehicle diagnostics
The RUGGED Q170 reads CAN bus data such as engine status, consumption and sensor values and processes them in real time. Thanks to the powerful CPU, complex algorithms for fault detection and prediction can be executed efficiently.
  2. Route optimization and navigation
The mini PC runs sophisticated navigation software and dynamically calculates the best routes, taking traffic, weather and roadworks into account. The high computing power enables rapid adaptation to changing conditions.
  3. Fleet management communication
The PC communicates securely and encrypted with the control center via integrated 4G/5G modules. Optionally, up to two SIM cards can be used to ensure an uninterrupted connection.
  4. Driver assistance
The mini PC controls a touch display that shows the driver routes, diagnostic data and digital freight documents. Thanks to the display ports, up to two screens can be controlled independently of each other, with 2x 4K@60Hz supported.

Durability and OS security as an advantage

A key advantage of the RUGGED Q170 is its support for Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021, which will continue to be supplied with security updates until 2032. This is essential for the logistics company, as the trucks have a service life of 7-10 years and require a stable, unchanged software environment. The long-term availability of the operating system ensures a high level of investment security and reduces the total cost of ownership.

Optimization of operating processes

The use of our spo-comm RUGGED Q170 Mini-PC has led to a significant improvement in the company's operating processes. The real-time data processing, reliable communication and robust design have increased efficiency and reduced downtime. Thanks to the long-term availability of the operating system, the RUGGED PC is a future-proof solution for the demanding requirements of long-distance and construction site traffic.
